It’s a Blue-Spotted Cornetfish! Up for my early morning walk between Las Olas and Sunrise this week, and out of the blue, shall we say “polka dot blue,” a fish decided to go my same way. Mr. Cornetfish flipped and glided aside my walk along the surf for 10 minutes or so. He was happy to allow me 10’s of iPhone pics and videos.

After the little adventure, I quizzed the iPhone’s search to figure out exactly what I just experienced. Quick research was a little mixed as to whether this fish is common or uncommon to the area, but further inquiry seems to place this fish as familiar to the Atlantic Coast and Caribbean area as well as several other regions of the world. Look at local Fort Lauderdale Facebook and Flickr postings, and you’ll find this unusual, slender, big-eyed, long nosed fish is indeed not so uncommon to the area. Well, the little walking buddy was an uncommonly and surprisingly loyal friend that day. And should you find this creature during your next dip into the sea, don’t be alarmed, while they may find a small fish or crustacean a nice treat, they mean you no harm. Ok, let me be “100%,” I did keep on the land side of the surface with my new friend :). To wrap-up this Cornetfish’s story, they have an interesting family tree, they are related to the seahorse! Go figure. Hope you enjoyed the short video, and till next time happy adventures!
